Hollywood has managed to pump out a few exciting trailers before Comic-Con arrives this Friday. The trailers presented here are genuinely worth getting excited for, well most of them are. As usual Disney takes over with two trailers, both for live-action remakes. It doesn’t seem like they’re stopping anytime soon with these remakes. As usual I will give my brief thoughts on each trailer starting from my most anticipated movie and ending with my least favourite.
1. Mulan (2020)
This remake actually looks like a remake and not an exact copy but in a different medium. I am really excited to see some beautiful Chinese culture presented on the big screen. Last year’s Crazy Rich Asians made waves of headlines and was received incredibly well, I really hope this movie will follow in that movie’s luck and praise. The movie looks gorgeous, epic and well acted. I also love how even though it is not based strictly on the animated version it still retains a bit of the look of that movie. This movie looks badass and I can’t wait to see how experimental Disney gets with this movie. I personally don’t mind the drastic changes like no musical numbers and no Mushu, I just want a good movie and this look like it will deliver.
2. Jumanji: The Next Level
I am a huge fan of Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle, I absolutely adore that movie, I’ve seen it twice now and when I saw the trailer I got really excited and it did not disappoint. I love how the team behind this movie actually put thought into how a sequel would play out or how to not make it boring or repetitive. I love the twist that the game is busted and that it glitched and switched the characters, it’s brilliant. It also knows it’s a sequel so it’s bigger, grander and funnier. I laughed so many times during this trailer, I can’t imagine how funny the actual movie is! I also love that it’s a family movie for the whole family and not for the kids only. My family and I have already picked this as our holiday movie!
3. Knives Out
I don’t hate Star Wars: The Last Jedi, I actually like it a lot even though it does have it’s fair share of plot problems so I am excited to see where Rian Johnson goes next and I have to say, this movie looks promising. I love murder dramas, I personally liked the Murder On the Orient Express remake from two years ago, it’s not necessarily an entertaining movie throughout but the atmosphere and visuals were so captivating that it was worth watching. The biggest sell is obviously the amazing ensemble cast. I love everyone in this cast however Chris Evans looks like he was cast in the wrong role. He wasn’t funny at all in my opinion. However it looks fun and entertaining, the cast will deliver and if the mystery is written well, we’re in for a treat. That being said I won’t be rushing to cinemas to watch it, another trailer is needed.
4. Maleficent: Mistress Of Evil
I was really excited for the first Maleficent movie but I was really let down by it. It’s still a perfectly fine guilty pleasure movie to watch but it should’ve been a lot better. A sequel wasn’t really necessary. The trailer didn’t do much to convince me to watch it. I love how this movie is basically Daddy’s Home but in the Maleficent world. Watching Angelina Jolie and Michelle Pfeiffer go head to head sounds fun. Also as usual since it’s from Disney it looks beautiful just like the first movie. It looks like a fun but predictable movie which will be forgotten a month after it’s out. Also Disney didn’t do themselves any favours releasing this during Halloween season. This movie would’ve benefited far more from an August release which to be frank would also benefit August because it doesn’t look that good in terms of movies.
